Youth Police Academy CLASS # 1

   DeWitt Police Department’s “Youth Police Academy” 

 What:

·        To provide the opportunity to learn and understand the workings of the DeWitt Police Department and the Criminal Justice System

·        To provide a better understanding of the training and education needed to pursue a career in Law Enforcement

·        To demonstrate how the Criminal Justice System fits into serving the community

·        To discuss skills and knowledge necessary to function and succeed in their endeavors

·        To show the basic aspects of several areas of public safety

·        To discuss ‘Core Values’

·        To develop positive attitude development, self-discipline, and motivation both as an individual and as part of a team

·        To teach police officer training and responsibilities

·        To learn and discuss Law Enforcement operations

 

When:

            December 7th, 2009 through January 18th, 2010

           

            Monday Nights ONLY from 6:30PM – 8:30PM at the police department (7 classes total)

 

Applications:

 

Open to all Central High School students (class is limited to 15 participants) 

 

All interested students shall fill out an application (available at the DeWitt Police Department, at www.dewittpolice.freeservers.com, from Officer Shia Cruciani, or the HS guidance office) and turn it into the police department’s front office no later than November 30th. 

 

Students selected to participate in the academy will be notified of their acceptance by a letter sent to their home along with other pertinent forms and the academy syllabus. 

 

Graduation:

 

A graduation ceremony will be held for the academy participants at the DeWitt Community Center on Thursday, January 21st at 6PM, along with the Citizen’s Police Academy class. 

 

Activities (subject to change):

 

· Police Department & Squad Car Tour(s)

· Presentation on Law Enforcement Agencies

· Mock Building Searches

· Mock Traffic Stops

· Criminal Investigations / Mock Crime Scene

· Fingerprinting

· K-9 and Search & Rescue Operations

· SWAT Operations

· Defensive Tactics

· Clinton County Courthouse Tour / Mock Trial

· Alcohol & Drug Presentation / Video & Activities

· Internet Crimes

· CPR

 

Cost:  Students will be asked to purchase a Youth Police Academy polo shirt (approximately $20) through the DeWitt Police Foundation, but no other cost(s) will be incurred by participating in the academy.
